COME TO WHERE I’M FROM London: Tricycle Theatre

Tonight COME TO WHERE I’M FROM London opens at Tricycle theatre in North West London also known as North Weezy to those in the know. This evening will see performances from poet Zia Ahmed, writer for stage and screen Karla Williams, poet with a PhD in Biophysics Mediah Ahmed, playwright and director Ché Walker and self confessed writer/actor/director/comedian/hypocrite Gabriel Bisset-Smith (he’s also been nominated for a BAFTA).

Zia Ahmed

Zia Ahmed is from and based in North West London. He is currently a London Laureate, having been shortlisted to be the Young Poet Laureate for London 2015/16. He was 2014/15 poet-in-residence for Cape Farewell looking at the cultural response to climate change. He won the Roundhouse Poetry Slam in 2011. @ziasighs

Karla Williams

Karla Williams won the Best Screenplay Award at the Van d’Or Awards 2013 for her short film PRETTY BITCH (based upon the stage play of the same name). With the stage play touring across the UK, the film has been screened internationally at the BFI in London, Denmark, Cannes, Berlin, Vancouver and Turkey. Her full length play BUT I DON’T LIKE GIRLS was selected for the Talawa Firsts Festival 2014 and long listed for the Alfred Fagon Award 2014 and Bruntwood Prize 2015. @KarlawithaK82

Mediah Ahmed

Mediah Ahmed was born and bred in North West London. With a PhD in Biophysics, her love of theatre was sparked while participating in the Unheard Voices writing workshops at Royal Court. Her first piece, REPENTANCE, ran for two weeks as part of ANGLE at the Bush. She also has poetry published in the SALIDAA and Keats House Poets’ anthologies. Her last play, GRAVE, featured in the Tamasha Scratch Night at Soho Theatre. @mudda28

Ché Walker

Ché Walker is a playwright and director. His previous work with Paines Plough includes Crazy Love.

Walker’s work in theatre includes Been So Long (musical – Young Vic/ETT),Been So Long (stageplay – Royal Court, Runner-up in the 31st John Whiting Award), The Frontline (Shakespeare’s Globe), Iphigenia (Southwark Playhouse), Flesh Wound (Royal Court – winner of the George Devine Award), Car Thieves (National Studio), Extended Family (Chichester Festival Theatre – winner of Playwrights’ Slam), Dance For Me (Stratford East Theatre) and Rootz Spectacular (Belgrade Theatre). His one man show, Lovesong which he wrote and directed, staring Omar toured the UK last year, produced by ETT following its successful run at the Edinburgh Festival. Walker is currently writing a new musical version of Carmen for the Open Air Theatre as well as writing his own musical adaptation of The Bacchaewith Arthur Darvill for ETT. This year Walker will direct the feature film adaptation of his original musical Been So Long from his own screenplay for Greenacre Films/UKFC and is also developing an original television series with the BBC. He recently directed Estate Walls, a new play by Arinze Kene at The Oval House Theatre and will direct his next play Little Baby Jesus there in May this year.

Gabriel Bisset-Smith:

Gabriel Bisset-Smith is a BAFTA nominated writer/actor/director/comedian from London.

He’s had plays produced at the Hampstead Theatre, York Theatre Royal and for BBC Radio Four. He’s been on attachment at the Soho Theatre, the Royal Court and a regular story contributor on the Channel Four series Skins. His short film THRUSH won the Rushes Soho Shorts Festival Tenderpixel audience choice award, the 2010 Vimeo Best Narrative award and the Grand Jury Prize at the Disposable Film Festival. He was named one of Dazed & Confused magazines Dazed Visionaries and they commissioned him, alongside the likes of James Franco and Bjork, to make his latest film TOILETS, which has also won numerous awards.

He’s also directed lots of music videos and is one half of comedy double act GUILT & SHAME. Who have played sold out shows at the Soho Theatre, Underbelly, Bestival, Latitude and tour the country regularly.  He has also been nominated for the Off West End Most Promising Playwright award and has three feature films in development. Gabriel has just directed and co created the BBC’s groundbreaking multi platform murder mystery THE LAST HOURS OF LAURA K which earned him a BAFTA nomination in digital creativity. The show was also nominated for a Prix Italia, best visual experience at SXSW Interactive and won a Gold and Audience award at the LOVIES. He is currently previewing his second solo comedy show.
